In-situ high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy study on interaction of sodium with UO2+x film (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)

We studied in-situ the interaction of sodium metal with UO2+x (0 ≤ x 1) using thin films prepared by sputter deposition on Au substrate. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Grazing Incidence X-Ray Diffraction (GIXRD) characterized before after interaction. The results show that does not reduce stoichiometric UO2 at room temperature. Plasmon loss peaks, observed Na1s photoemission (PE) line, are characteristic metallic particles, point to a weak between UO2. oxidation temperature takes place only hyper-stoichiometric uranium dioxide films. Indeed, < 1), eventually in complete reduction U(VI) down U(IV). Molecular atomic oxygen affect differently sodium. wetting gold is much more important when oxidised oxygen. This leads shift core level peak, while molecular gives peak broadening without shift. Atomic seems play same role as interstitial present film. dissociation may be limiting step Heat treatment UO3 about 773 K formation NaUO3 film demonstrated quantitative analysis XPS GIXRD. also once U(V) formed, it stays stable up least 973 K, which shrinkage observed.
